From Pastor John…
Last Sabbath, Pastor Roger referenced the Ebenezer stone, set up by the prophet Samuel, as a remembrance of God’s deliverance of the Israelites from the Philistine marauding bands. (see 1 Samuel 7:12)
I have on top of my bookcase a number of “Ebenezer” mugs. Special mugs that remind me of times the Lord has been very close to me. One such mug is handmade pottery with the following etched into the side: “Redwood CM 1982.” That was the Camp Meeting (CM) when I was ordained to the gospel ministry. An important preacher gave a sermon, another sang a song, then all these ministers gathered around Joan and me, laying their hands on us and offering a dedicatory prayer. It was a memorable event and the mug reminds me of it.
Over nearly four decades, God has led me in His service. I have served in four states, baptized scores of people, and preached hundreds of sermons. It has truly been a challenging, yet joyful experience.
Sometimes I am asked, “When did you feel God calling you to ministry?” And I answer, “I’ve always wanted to be a minister!” When other little boys said they wanted to grow up to become a cowboy or a fireman, I said I wanted to be a minister. I remember opening my Rainbow Bible on our piano bench (which was just the right height for a pulpit) and preaching. My brothers walked by and told me to practice what I preached. So, I would speak a little louder and bang on the bench a little more. In looking back, my message probably was that we should obey our parents and be nice to our brothers.
What is your calling from God? All of us have been called.
What is your Ebenezer stone of that calling? All of us should have something to remind us of that.
Seek God. Seek God’s will for your life. And may we each experience the joy of working and walking with the Lord!
